For Parents
We consider it both a privilege and responsibility to have your teen participate in our program. Your teen's physical and emotional safety is our first priority. We strive to provide a wonderfully fun adventure that educates, builds character along with leadership and team participation skills and leaves your teen with a deeper appreciation of the outdoors. Our goal is to create an environment where integrity, kindness, courage and selflessness is understood to be expected of everyone. Below we try to address the questions and concerns we expect you might have regarding our camp operation and activities.
About Our Trips - some general information We maintain a ratio of at least one adult counselor to five teens in all camps. Unless otherwise indicated, all of camps are co-ed so in each camp we have both male and female counselors. The meals prepared are nutritionally balanced and teens are expected to participate in preparation and cleanup. Off the river we design activities to be both fun and promote personal growth, leadership and team participation skills. We consider every activity an opportunity to educate our teens and/or increase their awareness about safe and responsible participation in outdoor activities
Each day begins between 7:00 and 7:30 - breakfast is served about 8:00. All meal preparation and cleanup is a cooperative effort of our counselors and teens. A team is assigned to each meal to assist in preparation, serving and cleanup. We usually have lunch around noon at a stop along the river (or along the trail during a hike). The day’s main activity is generally complete and we are back at camp about 4:00 PM. Teens have from this time until dinner to shower, relax, read, play games and so forth. After dinner cleanup we gather for evening activities. Most evenings there will be a presentation, skit or group activity before relaxing around a campfire for sharing stories, conversation, and song.
We understand that the anticipation of rafting often invokes two different feelings- enthusiasm as well as concern. Rafting and inflatable kayaking can be exhilaratingly fun, can take you to wonderful places with beautiful scenery and can be a wonderful bonding experience with friends and family. These are the reasons over a million people take to the river each year. Rafting and inflatable kayaking are also adventure sports, however, and, as such, involve risk. This is what we do to make our trips as safe as possible- We bring considerable rafting experience to our camps. All guides used are experienced river guides and carry current CPR and First Aid certifications. They also receive training in swiftwater rescue. In most instances the guides are also our camp counselors- we prefer this whenever possible to preserve the continuity of the camp experience. We precede the first day on the river in each camp with an extended river safety and orientation activity followed by a mild section of river to allow the campers to become comfortable with the river. When included, inflatable kayaking is conducted on class II and easy class III sections only. We use very stable state-of-the-art self-bailing rafts. Life jackets and helmets are provided and required to be worn while on the river whether rafting or inflatable kayaking. We choose river sections whose difficulty is appropriate for the age and experience of the participants. We reserve the right to change or cancel any river activity if we deem river or other conditions or circumstances dictate such a decision.
Campers stay in single-gender 3 to 4 person tents. All campers retire to their tents at approximately 10:00 pm each evening.
All of our meals are designed to be delicious and nutritious. Meat is an option at most meals but all meals are "vegetarian friendly"- a full meal can be enjoyed without the meat option. Fruit and snacks are available at other appropriate times during the day. Water is readily available at our campsites and bottles of water are carried on the river. Soft drinks are not available in camp but can be purchased at the Camp Lotus store.
We choose counselors who exhibit a strong love for the
outdoors and an enthusiasm for sharing the experience and their
knowledge with others. We provide a thorough orientation and training
session to enable our counselors to provide a fun and safe camp
environment and to effectively handle camp situations that may arise.
Our Rafting Camp on the American is based at Camp Lotus.
Camp Lotus is on the South Fork of the American River about a mile from
the town of Lotus, California, approximately 40 miles east of Sacramento, California, USA. Driving time
from Sacramento varies from 45 minutes and up depending on traffic
conditions in Sacramento. You will be provided specific driving
directions in your Camper Welcome Package that is mailed to you upon
receipt of your registration and deposit. You can also find specific
directions by clicking on the links provided below.
