The
South Fork is the perfect whitewater river - easy access, warm summer
weather, beautiful scenery and tons of exciting rapids (over 50!) that
are fun for the beginning and expert rafter alike. The action will
bring you back again and again- we’ve been rafting the South Fork for
over 30 years!
Your one day trip
includes a delicious lunch served along the river. Two day trips
include lunch both days, dinner and breakfast. All of our meals include
a meat option but are also "vegetarian friendly".
Evenings we gather
around a campfire under a star-filled Sierra sky, sharing stories and
occasionally a song or two- a special part of every overnight trip.
We
run over 21 miles of river in two distinct sections. The upper run
starts out quickly with challenging rapids such as Meatgrinder, Triple
Threat and Troublemaker. The lower run begins moderately, meandering
through the scenic Coloma Valley amid the golden Sierra foothills, then barrels through the
granite-walled Gorge with rapids such as Satan's Cesspool, Bouncing
Rock, Hospital Bar and Recovery Room. This is some of California’s best
whitewater!
We use very stable
but lively state-of-the-art 12 and 13 foot self-bailing rafts with 4 to 6
persons per boat. Everyone paddles under the direction of an
experienced guide so you’re right in the action!

Further information about the South Fork of the American and our river
trips...
The South Fork flows are controlled by releases from a dam located
just upstream from the upper put-in. Dam releases
generally occur by about 9:00 AM. It takes approximately 3 hours for those
releases to reach our put-in location for the lower run at Camp Lotus.
Releases are generally quite reliable as to the time of release and
consistent in the amount released, usually between 1200 cfs (cubic feet
per second) and 1800 cfs. These flows provide nice class III level
action on both sections. (Rivers are classified at levels from I through
VI under a system originated in Europe with higher numbers representing
more intensity and technical difficulty to the rapids.) Class III is
considered a fun but moderate level of rafting. The South Fork becomes a
class III plus at about 3000 cfs.
